11. Pangbourne Meadow

The meadow contains a large number of mooring places and is a popular place for walking, picnicking and playing on the grass, as well as a place for fishing and the launching of canoes. A new Dolphin Water Adventure centre is nearing competition.
“You see that sign that’s got National Trust on it” asked Billy” What’s that about then?”Well Billy said the Captain” It’s a charity that looks after many historic houses, gardens and beauty spots in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, I think that Scotland has its own one”. Often these old houses are given away by their owners because they can’t afford to keep them up and they donate them to the National Trust. I think that they also look after some monuments as well.”
“How do they pay for all that, then? “, asked Billy. “Well most of the cost is the cost of labour and thousands of volunteers work on the projects and of course, people can subscribe to the Trust and visit all their properties for free. The First Mate added “Essentially it’s a charity run by a group of good doers who like to hang about in old houses.” The Cabin Boy laughed and said “Well that rules you out then “
