175 .Brass bands

You often associate brass bands with northern England in the same that you associate these places with flat caps, ferrets and whippets and you would never expect such as place as Staines with brass bands.
So what exactly is a brass band? Well a brass band is a band that comprises of guys who play a mixture of brass and percussion instruments. In walking down Laleham Road we met up with such a band who were assembled together in the grounds of St.Peter’s Church and they were doing their regular Thursday rehearsal but instead of doing it in the church hall they were doing it al fresco to a private audience of three, us three crew members.

If you look at any brass band, you will always find that they are always comprised of a motley crew. Invariably such bands consist of fat bellied gentleman, ugly women with very strong glasses and beards, together with an assortment of sub-normal teenagers suffering from a wide range of skin diseases complaints and a number of pedophiles that have changed their names so often that they answer to any name that you care to call them ranging from Nancy to Clancy and from Everard to Elvis.
Well, when the band struck, it almost brought tears to our eyes when after half an hour we actually recognised  one of the for the tunes  they  were attempting to play. The First Mate turned to the Captain and said “I never knew that tunes like Chariots of Fire and Bright Eyes has such extensive horns, trumpets and trombones in them!”
